How did you convert? I'm surprised by how strong the freckles are in this image compared to their subtlety in the colour version.

EDIT: though at second inspection, this version is much darker, the detail in the hairline has disappeared - did you really clip the blacks?

I used a blue filter setting on the black & white conversion, which is why the freckles and other details stand out. I did also go darker with it, which is why that detail vanishes. It's possible I went a bit overboard there. : )

This is a she??
-jase- 2009-09-20 23:51:36
Yes. Is your mind blown? : )

Yeah! I saw mention of "him" and "he" on your blog and said out loud "whaaat?!' Aside from the facial hair, she (I feel weird saying that) really has that weathered, manly skin tone. Photographically speaking, the black and white brings the details to life here.
-jase- 2009-09-21 01:33:13
I don't think I identify her as a him on my blog...

Anywho, the skin tone here appears more weathered here in part because of how I did the b&w conversion. (Compare with the color version of the image.) I think of this as being consistent with Rhonda's personality, which really isn't manlike, but is rough-hewn and wolfish.

She's an awesome person, and a great photographic subject. Hell of a lot more interesting than the folks in the strobist pool. : )

I had it backward; your mention of "her" and not "him." My bad.

No problem. Gender is one of the areas of human experience which is so very complex in part because it usually seems -- to most of us, anyway -- to be so simple. When we encounter something that makes it impossible for us to keep seeing it that way, confusion is natural. : )
